KIBRIS / KYPROS:  A Portrait of Cyprus

Since 1974 Cyprus has been a divided Nation.  North Cyprus, or the Turkish Occupied Territories, is the subject of ongoing dispute and political discourse.  My work is not political, nor do I claim to offer any opinions on the Cyprus situation.

I have simply gathered a collection of images for a photographic portrayal of two cultures sharing the same island in the Mediterranean.

In my photographic portrayal the Turkish and Greek people of North and South Cyprus, I would like to highlight some of the unique qualities of each culture.  By bringing them together in one spot in cyperspace, I would like to suggest that despite our minor differences we are all essentially the same.

KIBRIS/KYPROS: Portraits of the People of Cyprus by  CRAIG ROBINSON

Since 1974 Northern Cyprus has been referred to as 'Kuzey Kibris' (North Cyprus in Turkish), or the Turkish Occupied Territory of North Cyprus.   The history of the Cyprus Situation varies depending on who you ask.  'Kypros', Greek for Cyprus, is what the Southern Cypriots call their country.

These are photographs of the people I met while traveling through North and South Cyprus in February - March 2008.  The photographs were taken in the towns and villages throughout the island, and represent a small slice of life of the people. Kibris meets Kypros in the Capital city of Nicosia (Lefkosia), the last divided city on earth.  A wall and military zones separate Northern Lefkosia from the Southern part of the city.
